Memorials in St John the Baptist, Piddington

Image
After a recent request for a photo of one of the memorials inside the church, we took some photos and made an album available. You can see it here (https://goo.gl/photos/Vd11Pf3kTdHMJP2D6) We also had a request to install a sign indicating that we have commonwealth war graves in our churchyard and that is now in place. In fact, there is just one commonwealth grave in our graveyard, which you can see below. This stone commemorates R.E.G. Hall (T/179137) a Driver with the Royal Army Service Corps, who died on the 29th of February, 1944, aged 28.

Father Christmas will be there between 12-2pm to accept your children’s or grandchildren’s letters so he can get on and make whatever they have asked for!  Our Wassail will be on the 14th at 6pm but come a bit earlier to enjoy Jo’s festive fizz. Word is getting out at how good it is. Our Wassail includes our Nine Lessons and Carols - it is a lovely end to the festival and as it is quite late in December this year it will definitely put you in the Christmas mood!

LENT COURSE: TRUE FREEDOM  T his year's course is looking at the important subject of modern slavery and Paul's letter to the Galatians. It should be a provoking and challenging course and we hope to see you there.   The 5-week course will be held in Hardingstone Church starting Tuesday the 20th of February at 2pm.  There will also be an evening session on Zoom starting on Thursday the 22nd of February. For anyone who would like to attend the evening session please contact Revd Julie at; revjuliescott@gmail.com to get the link.  The issue of the modern slavery is one that affects many people in our communities on a daily basis and this course will allow us to listen to case studies from survivors and explore Paul's letter.  You do not need to have an understanding of the Bible, or of the subject of Modern Slavery to take part in this course. We will explore this together as a group.  If you have any questions please contact Revd Julie at: r...

Bishop’s Christmas Message

Image
As we look forward to Christmas, and as we hear the news that less than half of people in this country described themselves as Christian in the 2021 census, we have some serious thinking to do. Doubtless the purveyors of chocolate, alcohol, luxury foods, toys, video games, decorations,  jewellery  and books will continue to do well this month: our nation will still celebrate Christmas after a fashion. But Christ is less and less at the centre of it. Increasingly our task as Christians and Churches is to teach again the very basics of the faith, not assuming that people know anything at all about it. The simple Christmas story is a good place to start, but we also need to explain the deeper meaning and encourage people towards commitment.  So  I have a double-barrelled Christmas message this year. To Christians and  Churches  I say: Rejoice in Jesus, all that he is and means, and seek to find new ways of sharing him with those around you. To the major...
